Tutorial Details

Taking the time to plan a strong composition is an essential component of a successful painting. In this lesson, Heather Arenas discusses the thought process that she goes through before even picking up a brush.
Heather considers several potential compositions for her reference photo. By introducing the concept of a notan sketch, she demonstrates how she evaluates her final design to ensure it contains a harmonious distribution of lights and darks.
Regardless of your medium or style, this is a stage that all artists should incorporate into their painting process.
